High-temperature bearings are specialized rolling-element bearings engineered to operate reliably in environments where standard bearings would rapidly degrade, lose their structural integrity, or experience lubrication failure. They are designed to withstand extreme heat, often while maintaining precision, load capacity, and rotational accuracy under demanding thermal conditions.

Key Design Features & Material Solutions:

The performance of a high-temperature bearing is defined by its material composition and heat treatment, as every component must be upgraded from a standard bearing.

1. Material & Heat Treatment:

   • Rings & Balls:

     • High-Temperature Chrome Steel (e.g., SV30): Standard bearing steel (like 52100) is tempered at low temperatures. High-temperature grades undergo a special high-temperature stabilization tempering process (often above 300°C), allowing them to operate continuously at temperatures up to 250°C - 300°C without losing hardness.

     • Tool Steel (M50, M50NiL): Excellent for temperatures up to 315°C - 350°C and used in aerospace applications.

     • Stainless Steel (440C): Can operate up to 315°C - 400°C and offers good corrosion resistance.

     • High-Nickel Alloys & Specialty Steels: For extreme temperatures exceeding 500°C - 800°C, materials like Inconel 600/718, X-750, or AISI M2 are used.

   • Ceramics: Silicon Nitride (Si3N4) ceramic balls are increasingly common. They are lightweight, electrically insulating, and can withstand temperatures over 800°C without losing hardness or expanding as much as steel.

2. Cages (Retainers):

   • Machined Brass or Bronze: A standard high-temperature choice, stable up to 300°C.

   • Stainless Steel (304, 316): Suitable for temperatures up to 400°C - 500°C.

   • Solid Lubricant-Embedded (e.g., Graphite/MoS2 in Silver): Used in very high-temperature and vacuum environments.

   • Polyimide (PI) / Polyether Ether Ketone (PEEK): High-performance polymers for continuous use up to 250°C - 300°C.

3. Lubrication (The Critical Factor):

   • High-Temperature Greases: Special greases with synthetic base oils and thickeners (e.g., polyurea, clay) designed for long-life operation from 200°C up to 350°C.

   • Solid Lubricants: Molybdenum Disulfide (MoS2) or Graphite coatings are applied to raceways and balls. This is the primary solution for temperatures above 350°C or in vacuums where liquid lubricants fail.

   • Oil Mist/Lubrication Systems: For precise, continuous lubrication in critical high-temperature applications.

Common Types & Configurations:

• Deep Groove Ball Bearings: The most common type, available in high-temperature designs.

• Cylindrical Roller Bearings: For applications requiring high radial load capacity at elevated temperatures.

• Spherical Plain Bearings: Often used in linkages subject to high heat and misalignment.

• Common Prefixes/Suffixes: Manufacturers often use codes like HT (High Temp), S1 (180°C), S2 (250°C), S3 (300°C), S4 (350°C) to denote temperature class.
